Hair Care Guides

Choosing your first everyday wig.
Check the fit, care routine and full cost.

Start with how you expect to wear the wig: daily, occasionally or for particular outings. Compare its fit, fastening, washing and drying needs. Use a style photo to judge the look and a permitted try-on to check how the cap feels.

What is going on

A man holds a short curly wig by its sturdy cap before putting it on.

Check how the cap goes on and comes off

Look inside for fasteners, the tabs beside the ears and delicate lace. Ask whether this exact wig is ready to wear or needs fitting, cutting or adhesive. Practice removing it and ask how its particular lace front attaches.

A woman holds a section of dry wig hair above its ends while combing the tips; the rest of the wig rests on a towel.

Ask for the complete care instructions

Confirm whether it is standard synthetic, heat-friendly synthetic, human hair or a blend. Read the full washing, drying and restyling steps before buying. Compare the tools, hands-on time and drying space each piece needs.

What helps, day to day

Add up the setup cost

  • Include fitting or cutting, required care products, a permitted comb or brush, a drying stand and storage.
  • Check return conditions before removing tags, cutting lace, washing or wearing it outside.
  • Ask which extras are essential before buying them.

Check comfort while you move

  • During a permitted try-on, sit, look down and turn your head gently.
  • Check for pressure at the ears, front and nape, and for slipping.
  • Take it off if it pulls or pinches.
  • Ask about fit instead of tightening it further.

Plan where it will go after wearing

  • Choose a clean place to leave the wig when you take it off and enough space for drying.
  • If you travel, check how its cap and lace should be packed.
  • Include contact with collars and glasses in your try-on.

Products, by the job they do

Choose shampoo for your own scalp separately

Remove the wig before washing your own hair. Choose your shampoo around scalp oil, dirt and product buildup. Use the wig’s own approved cleanser on the piece, following its separate washing instructions.

Browse cleansing products. Bring the shampoos you are choosing between to the consultation, along with what you liked or disliked about them.

Check which conditioner the wig needs

Find the conditioner type and placement in the wig’s instructions before buying. Some methods use rinse-out conditioner, others a leave-in. For the human-hair method pictured, conditioner stays on the permitted lengths, away from the cap and knots.

Measuring and trying on a wig

Measure for the maker’s size chart

Arrange your own hair as you will wear it under the wig. Follow the maker’s measuring path and record the units. Check whether its chart also asks for ear-to-ear and front-to-back distances.

Practice with a fitted glueless wig

This method is for a wig designed to stay on without adhesive. Handle its sturdy cap edges and ear tabs, keeping pressure off delicate lace. Practice taking it off before a long outing, and stop if it pulls, pinches or slips.
