Measure head circumference for a wig

Record the distance around your head before comparing wig sizes. The steps show the tape path, how to hold the overlap for reading and how to check the result on your own.

Step by step

  1. An adult checks a soft measuring tape before measuring around the head.
    STEP 1 OF 5

Prepare your hair and measuring tape

    • Arrange any hair as it will sit beneath the wig. Use a soft tape with readable marks, and have paper and a pen or a note app ready.
    • Check the supplier’s circumference diagram for the front starting point and the route above the ears and around the nape, at the back of your neck.
    • Find the zero mark on the tape. It may sit slightly beyond the metal end; use the mark rather than assuming the tape’s edge is zero.
  2. An adult checks that a soft measuring tape follows the lower hairline at the nape and passes above the ear.
    STEP 2 OF 5

Bring the tape around the nape

    • Center the tape around the back of your head along the lower hairline shown in the diagram. Hold an end in each hand and bring both ends forward.
    • Keep the tape above the ears, flat and untwisted. Feel the back with one hand if needed while the other holds the ends in front.
  3. An adult holds the soft tape at the front overlap after tracing around the head and nape.
    STEP 3 OF 5

Meet the ends at the front hairline

    • Place the zero mark at the front starting point. Slide the other side until the tape touches gently all the way around, without squeezing hair or skin.
    • Keep the route from the supplier’s diagram. Pinch the numbered part exactly where it meets zero so the position cannot slip.
  4. An adult holds the measured point on a centimeter tape after lifting it off the head.
    STEP 4 OF 5

Keep the pinch while reading the tape

    • Lift the tape away while holding that same point. Bring it close enough to read the number at the pinch; keep the tape’s scale and units in view.
    • Write down the reading before releasing it. Do not mix the inch scale on one side with the centimeter scale on the other.
  5. An adult records a circumference reading beside the loosely coiled measuring tape.
    STEP 5 OF 5

    Repeat and save the result

    • Set the tape down and repeat the whole measurement with the same hair and tape path. Record the readings, units, date and how your hair was arranged.
    • If the readings differ, reset and try again without pulling tighter. Ask for fitting help if the tape keeps slipping or you cannot get a consistent result.
    • Complete the supplier’s other sizing measurements before choosing a cap. Coil the tape loosely and keep the note.

One circumference reading and a repeat; arranging long hair or a full wig fitting takes additional time.

Editorial estimate, not timed. Familiarity with the equipment and careful handling can change the hands-on work.

You’re done when…

You have two consistent readings, their units and a note of how your hair sat beneath the tape. Use them with the supplier’s remaining measurements and fit check.
