Style curls with rake-and-shake

Choose rake-and-shake when you want fingers instead of a brush to gather already-prepared wet waves, curls or coils into curl groups before drying.

A woman holds the ends of one wet curl section with one hand and makes a small side-to-side shake while the other hand stays near the section.

Step by step

  1. A woman with wet loose curls holds one detangled side section between both clean hands.
    STEP 1 OF 4

    Prepare one wet section

    • Clip away the rest and stop to detangle any snag before raking.
  2. A woman spreads one hand through a wet curl section while her other hand supports the hair below.
    STEP 2 OF 4

    Rake from roots to ends

    • Spread the fingers of one hand through the section below the roots.
    • Guide the fingers through to the ends without pulling through knots.
  3. A woman holds the ends of one wet curl section with one hand and makes a small side-to-side shake while the other hand stays near the section.
    STEP 3 OF 4

    Hold and shake lightly

    • Pinch only the ends of the section.
    • Give a small side-to-side shake, keeping the root comfortable.
    • Repeat the prepare, rake and shake steps until every intended section has been released.
  4. A woman releases a defined wet curl group and keeps both hands clear while another section remains clipped.
    STEP 4 OF 4

    Release and leave it

    • Let the section fall into its own curl group.
    • Repeat elsewhere, then keep hands off the finished groups while they dry.
    • After the hair is fully dry, arrange only where needed with your fingers and collect the sectioning clips.

About 10–25 min hands-on for dividing wet, detangled hair and raking, shaking and releasing each section. Product application and complete drying are separate.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. Full-head work repeats the movement across many sections; dense hair or small curl groups can take longer.

You’re done when…

Each selected section has been raked once, lightly shaken at the ends and released into a curl group that can dry without further handling.
