Secure and release a loose bun with a hair stick
A hair stick gives a reachable bun a removable anchor without an elastic around its base. Use it when your hair can form a relaxed coil and the stick can slide through without scalp pressure.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 4Make and support a relaxed coil
- Set the stick within reach. Gather dry, detangled hair low enough to reach comfortably; twist the free length while keeping the roots relaxed.
- Wrap the length around its base and tuck the ends beneath. Hold the coil with your left hand; pick up the stick in your right.
STEP 2 OF 4Catch a small outside edge
- Hold the stick like a pencil. Slip its tip under a thin outer layer on the right edge of the bun, initially pointing away from the bun’s center.
- Keep the tip in hair and clear of your skin. Your left hand continues supporting the coil; do not push toward your scalp.
STEP 3 OF 4Reverse and slide beneath the coil
- Pivot the stick so its tip points left across the bun. Catch a little hair beneath the coil, then slide across, nearly parallel to your head.
- Let the tip emerge through the opposite outer edge. Ease your supporting hand away and check that the bun holds without pulling.
- If it presses or will not slide, support the coil, withdraw and reset. Try less hair in the first catch instead of pushing harder.
STEP 4 OF 4Support the bun and withdraw
- Cup the bun with your left hand. With your right, slowly draw the stick back along its entry path until the tip is clear.
- Pause to free a caught strand rather than pulling it through. Unwrap the coil, release the tucked ends and put the stick away.
One bun, fit check, later removal and putting away the stick. Detangling is separate.
You’re done when…
The bun holds without scalp pressure; for takedown, the stick comes fully free before you unwrap the supported coil.
