Secure a bun with a U-shaped pin

Support a relaxed coiled bun while catching its edge with a curved two-prong pin. Flip the pin to follow your head, then seat it beneath the coil without pressing your scalp.

Step by step

  1. A man supports his low bun while seating a curved U-shaped pin beneath its outer coil.
    STEP 1 OF 2

Catch the edge and reverse the pin

    • Start with dry detangled hair and a smooth curved U-shaped pin. Gather loosely, twist the free length and coil it into a bun with the ends tucked beneath.
    • Support the coil in one hand. Hold the pin with its curve facing away from your head and catch a little hair at one outer edge of the bun.
    • Flip the pin so its curve follows your head. Slide its two prongs beneath the bun through the hair below, keeping both tips off your scalp.
    • Stop for pressure, snagging or resistance. Withdraw gently and reset with less outer hair caught, or choose a different fastener.
  2. A man holds his bun while withdrawing a two-prong hairpin clear of the hair.
    STEP 2 OF 2

    Hold the coil while withdrawing

    • Lower your hands and check for pulling or pressure. Refit or take down an uncomfortable bun.
    • To remove it, support the bun with one hand. Ease the pin backward along its entry path with the other, freeing any caught strand before continuing.
    • Once both prongs are clear, unwrap the coil and release its tucked ends. Put the pin away.

One small style and later removal; detangling is separate.

Unmeasured editorial handling estimate for the stated scope. Familiarity, access and the item or hair being handled change the time.

You’re done when…

The pin follows the head’s curve beneath the bun, with no scalp pressure, and slides out while the coil is supported.
