Scrunch gel into waves and curls

When your routine uses gel to support waves, curls or coils, scrunching works it through the loose lengths with an upward cupping motion. The gel label controls the amount and whether your hair starts wet or damp.

Woman cups the ends of her own wet wavy-curly hair in both open hands and lifts them toward her jaw.

Step by step

  1. Woman with wet wavy-curly hair spreads a small amount of clear gel between both palms before touching her hair.
    STEP 1 OF 3

    Prepare the gel and hair

    • Start with hair in the wet or damp state named by your gel's directions.
    • Apply and spread the label-directed amount over your palms as instructed.
    • Set the container down so both hands are free before touching your hair.
  2. Woman cups the ends of her own wet wavy-curly hair in both open hands and lifts them toward her jaw.
    STEP 2 OF 3

    Cup the ends and lift

    • Bring one reachable side forward and hold both open palms beneath the ends.
    • Lift the ends toward your head so the waves, curls or coils gather loosely in your hands.
    • Press the gathered section once with relaxed fingers; do not twist or rub it.
  3. Woman gathers the opposite side of her wet wavy-curly hair in both open hands during a cup-and-release cycle.
    STEP 3 OF 3

    Release and work around

    • Lower your hands and let the section fall completely before gathering it again.
    • Repeat the cup, lift, gentle press and release cycle around the selected lengths.
    • Stop when the gel is worked through as directed, then dry by the method in your routine.

The photo shows the gathered phase of a second cycle; release the section fully between compressions.

About 1–3 min hands-on for dispensing, spreading and scrunching gel through reachable sections. Start with detangled hair in the label's wet or damp state. Drying is separate.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. Broad scrunching movements are quicker than shaping individual curls; long or dense hair can take longer.

You’re done when…

The label-directed gel is spread through the selected loose lengths, and each gathered section has been fully released before drying.
