Put on a loose sleep bonnet

When dry loose hair gets disturbed against bedding, a roomy bonnet can contain it overnight. This method keeps the fit comfortable and the hair loosely arranged inside.

A woman checks both sides of a sleep bonnet band resting flat around her hairline and ears.

Step by step

  1. A woman with dry loose curls holds open a roomy plum sleep bonnet with both hands.
    STEP 1 OF 5

    Open the bonnet

    • Check that your hair, scalp and clean bonnet are dry before you begin.
    • Turn the smooth hair-facing side inward and open the band with both hands.
    • Make sure the bonnet has room for your hair without packing it down.
  2. With her head bent forward and curls hanging loose, a woman holds a plum bonnet band at her nape and open toward the front.
    STEP 2 OF 5

Set the band at your nape

    • Bend your head forward as far as is comfortable and let the loose hair fall toward your face.
    • Hold the band open with both hands and set its back edge at your nape, where your neck meets your hairline.
    • Draw the sides forward over your hair, keeping the front open so the lengths can hang out.
  3. A woman holds the front bonnet band open with one hand while her other palm cups and lifts the loose curl ends inside.
    STEP 3 OF 5

    Ease the lengths inside

    • Keep your head tipped forward and hold the front of the band open with one hand.
    • Cup the hanging ends in your other palm and lift them into the bonnet, folding longer lengths loosely.
    • Once the lengths are inside, ease the front band onto your hairline and slowly raise your head.

Let the hair sit loosely inside. If you have to squeeze it in or the back band slips, pause and reposition; use a roomier bonnet if needed.

  4. A woman checks both sides of a sleep bonnet band resting flat around her hairline and ears.
    STEP 4 OF 5

    Check the fit

    • Set the band flat around your hairline and nape, following the bonnet's fit directions.
    • Tuck any stray ends with your fingertips; do not drag the band across your edges.
    • Slide a fingertip under the band and check that no section feels pulled, pressed or pinched.
  5. A woman eases a plum sleep bonnet upward with both hands while her dry curls fall free in the morning.
    STEP 5 OF 5

    Remove it in the morning

    • Support the hair through the bonnet with one hand before you lift the band.
    • Ease the bonnet up and forward without pulling it through the lengths.
    • Let your hair fall, then use your usual separate refresh only if it needs one.

About 30 sec–2 min hands-on for opening and fitting the bonnet, tucking loose ends, checking comfort and morning removal. Add overnight wear; prior drying and a morning refresh are separate.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. A familiar bonnet is quick to fit; bulky or long hair and first-time band adjustment take longer.

You’re done when…

Your dry hair sits loosely inside, the band lies flat without pressure or pulling, and you can move your head comfortably. In the morning, the bonnet comes off without catching the lengths.
