Plop waves or curls with a T-shirt

Choose T-shirt plopping for a temporary wrapped stage after styling damp waves, curls or coils. The fabric holds the lengths in a loose pile while it absorbs some water; unwrap and continue drying afterward.

Woman lowers the ends of her own damp wavy-curly hair into the center of a flat cotton T-shirt without twisting it.

Step by step

  1. Woman bends over a clean white cotton T-shirt spread flat with the hem nearest her and the neckline and sleeves farther away.
    STEP 1 OF 4

Spread the shirt on a dry surface

    • Finish the damp-hair styling steps already in your routine; the hair should no longer be dripping.
    • Lay a clean cotton T-shirt flat with its hem edge nearest you and the neckline and sleeves farther away.
    • Smooth the center of the shirt so the lengths have a clear place to land.
  2. Woman lowers the ends of her own damp wavy-curly hair into the center of a flat cotton T-shirt without twisting it.
    STEP 2 OF 4

Lower the ends into the center

    • Bend forward at a comfortable angle with both hands available for balance and placement.
    • Lower the ends into the center of the shirt first, then let the remaining lengths fold over themselves.
    • Keep the hair in a loose pile. Do not rub it on the fabric or twist it into a rope.
  3. Woman stays bent forward with her head upside down, tying the T-shirt sleeves behind her head while the fabric encloses the curls piled at her crown.
    STEP 3 OF 4

    Bring the shirt around loosely

    • Stay bent forward with your head upside down and the curls piled at your crown. Bring the near hem edge to the back of your head.
    • Lift the neckline side over the front of your head to enclose the pile, keeping the lengths inside the shirt.
    • Take one sleeve in each hand, roll only the loose fabric beside your ears, then tie the sleeves behind your head without pulling tight.
    • Once the wrap is secure, stand upright slowly. It should stay put without pulling the roots or pressing the neck.
  4. Woman slowly unwraps a cotton T-shirt while her still-damp waves and curls fall freely for further drying.
    STEP 4 OF 4

    Unwrap and continue drying

    • Try about 30–60 minutes in the wrap. Unwrap sooner if it feels uncomfortable or if a longer wrap stretches your waves.
    • Support the shirt with both hands, loosen the sleeves, then gently lift the fabric away.
    • Let the damp lengths fall without rubbing or tugging them apart.
    • Let your hair finish drying naturally or use a hair dryer with a diffuser attachment. This drying time is separate from the time in the wrap.

About 1–3 min hands-on for laying out the T-shirt, wrapping, checking comfort and later unwrapping. Add the guide's suggested 30–60-minute wrap period and all subsequent drying.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. The wrap is one fabric arrangement, not continuous hair work; practice and hair volume can make fitting slower.

You’re done when…

The shirt is fully removed, the damp lengths are hanging freely, and the hair is ready for the next air-drying or diffuser step.
