Finger-coil curls

For selected curls or a whole loose curly or coily style that you want to shape one clump at a time. Smoothing, winding and releasing each damp section forms a temporary spiral before drying.

A woman wraps one small damp curl clump in a spiral around her own index finger.

Step by step

  1. A woman separates one small damp curl clump from a reachable section of her own hair.
    STEP 1 OF 4

Bring one curl-sized clump within reach

    • Start with detangled loose curly or coily hair that is damp or wet. Apply any selected preceding product by its own directions.
    • Clip or rest the other hair away, then separate one small natural clump from a lower reachable section. Support it near the base without pulling.
  2. A woman supports one damp curl clump and gently smooths it toward the tip.
    STEP 2 OF 4

    Smooth from base to tip

    • Hold near the base with one hand. With the other hand, slide your thumb and forefinger gently down the clump toward the tip.
    • Stop and release if you meet a snag; detangle it separately instead of pulling through.
  3. A woman wraps one small damp curl clump in a spiral around her own index finger.
    STEP 3 OF 4

Wind the clump around one finger

    • Place the tip against one index finger and wind the clump around that finger in the direction it already turns most easily.
    • Continue the smooth spiral toward the base without tightening at the scalp. Keep the root comfortable and the clump separate from its neighbors.

The photo shows one small side section. For the back, bring a lower section forward, switch hands or use a stable mirror; no helper is required.

  4. A woman releases an intact finger-shaped coil and moves both hands away.
    STEP 4 OF 4

Slide out and let the coil hang

    • Gently slide your finger out without pulling the spiral apart, then let the coil hang freely.
    • Repeat on the selected clumps. Stop once they are shaped and comfortable, then leave them alone for the separately chosen drying method.

About 20–60 min hands-on for smoothing and finger-coiling a full head of damp, detangled hair. Product application and drying are separate; a few selected curls take much less time.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. Each clump is handled separately; small coils or very long, dense hair can take longer than an hour.

You’re done when…

Each selected clump hangs as a comfortable, separate spiral with no tight root or snag. Your hands are away and the coils are ready to dry without more rewinding.
