A whole day outside, scalp included.
Check the part, not just the brim.

A day of gardening, a match or a festival can leave your scalp in the sun for hours. Pick your coverage before you leave, know where the shade is and keep sunscreen within reach. However full your hair looks, it isn’t a substitute.

What is going on

An adult examines the closed crown and broad brim of a fabric hat.

Look for gaps over the scalp

An open-crown visor leaves the top of your head bare. Check whether the hat covers your part and crown, and whether the brim shades the skin around it. A covered-crown, wide-brim hat is a good start, and a UPF label helps you choose.

Plan your breaks and your sunscreen

Find the shade before you need it, and carry a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher for any bare skin. Outdoors, put it on again at least every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Ears, neck and any uncovered scalp count.

What helps, day to day

A woman examines a claw clip away from her hair, holding its solid body.

Your style won’t fit under the hat

  • Take out any hard clip that would press under the crown.
  • Go for a lower, softer arrangement or a hat that fits better, as long as the scalp stays covered.
  • Never force a hat over a style that hurts, and don’t swap out safety headgear you’re required to wear.

Wind keeps shifting the hat

  • Stop and check whether your part or crown is showing.
  • Use the hat’s own adjuster to snug it, and keep it comfortable.
  • If it still won’t stay, find shade or a different hat rather than pulling the hair under it tighter and tighter.

You come home sweaty and dusty

  • Take the hat off gently and have a look at your scalp and lengths.
  • Wash when there’s dirt, oil or a build-up of product, and rinse it all out.
  • Clean and dry the hat the way its label says before the next long day.

Products, by the job they do

A shampoo for what the day left behind

Use a cleanser you already know to get the sweat, dust and product out afterward. Don’t let a styling product with protection in its name stand in for sunscreen or a hat. It isn’t the same thing.

Conditioning that keeps lengths tidy under a hat

Use your usual conditioner on the lengths that tangle, and let the hair dry before an everyday hat goes on. Conditioner doesn’t give your hair or scalp any sun protection.

How to do it

Settling a wide-brim hat comfortably over the hair.

1. Check the crown is covered and the fit is right

Choose a hat with a covered crown and a wide brim and settle it on without dragging the hairline. Look again whenever wind or movement moves it. Keep shade and sunscreen in the plan for the skin that’s still bare.

2. Keep the hair under it comfortable

Start with dry, detangled hair and take any hard clips out of the spot where the hat sits. Use a loose, low arrangement that fits underneath. Helmets and other required protective gear have their own rules, and this isn’t about those.

Crown covered

The same adult wears an open-crown visor in one panel and a broad-brimmed closed-crown hat in the other.
Before · crown open above the visorAfter care · crown under the hat
A visor leaves the crown open, a hat covers it. Coverage you can see is not a sun rating, so check the fabric and still protect bare skin.

Clip out before the hat

The same adult first has hair in a claw clip, then supports the released lengths with the removed clip beside a hat on the table.
Before · bulky clip inAfter care · clip out, ready for hat
The bulky clip comes out first, then the hat gets tried on. Check the fit and how much it covers next, and never press a hat over hardware.

Help with your hair-care routine

Bring your hair-care questions to the consultation. You can also read keeping a comfortable base beneath everyday hats.

  • Does my hat cover my part and crown, or just shade my face?
  • Where’s the shade, and when do I put sunscreen back on?
  • What do I need to do with my hair and the hat afterwards?

Tell us what you’re doing, how long you’ll be out, what skin is exposed, how your hat fits and how you usually care for your hair. The consultation can plan the washing and the hair handling around your coverage plan.
