Cover your scalp in the sun

A wide-brim hat can cover an exposed part or scalp while you are outdoors. Choose useful coverage, fit it without pulling your hair and know when to readjust or switch hats.

    Choose a covered crown and a brim all around

    • Check that the hat has a closed crown and a wide brim around the whole head. Avoid open-weave holes that let sunlight reach the scalp.
    • A sun-protection rating on the label is useful when choosing a hat. Set it on a clean surface and arrange your hair loosely so it fits without pulling.

    Lower the hat without catching your hair

    • Hold opposite sides of the brim with both hands and lower the hat over your head. Keep hair free of the inner band rather than dragging the hat across it.
    • Let go and gently turn and nod your head. The hat should stay in place without pressure. If it squeezes or slides, take it off and adjust the fit or choose another hat.

    Recheck after wind or movement

    • Use shade during the outing. If the hat shifts, stop and settle it back into place with your hair free of the band.
    • If you have to hold it on constantly, move into shade and change the fit or hat. Protect skin left exposed with sunscreen, following its application and reapplication directions.

    Lift the hat clear of your hair

    • Back indoors or in shade, hold both sides of the brim and lift the hat straight up. If hair catches, lower the hat slightly and free the strands before lifting again.
    • Set the hat on a clean surface without crushing its brim. Follow its cleaning directions and let any damp lining dry before putting it away.
