Keep headphones from catching your hair.
Make room for your hair, then reset any flat spots.

A strand caught in a hinge can turn taking your headphones off into a tug. The band can also leave a dent in your style. Clear hair from the cups before wearing them, lift them off gently, and refresh only the hair that needs it.

Why hair catches or gets flattened

A woman with gray waves holds removed headphones above a dry desk and looks at the joint beside an ear cup.

A hinge can catch a loose strand

Loose strands can slip into joints as the cups move. Check the headphones off your head for trapped hair or rough edges. If a joint keeps catching or its cover is damaged, ask the manufacturer about repair rather than taping over moving parts.

The band can press a dent into your style

After removing the headphones, slide your fingertips under the flattened roots and lift gently. Leave a dent alone if it does not bother you. If waves or curls need reshaping, use the illustrated refresh method below rather than brushing out the whole style.

Put them on and take them off gently

A woman moves her long hair behind her shoulders while the headphones rest on the desk.

Clear the hair around your ears

  • With the headphones still off, move loose lengths behind your shoulders or gather them loosely below where the band will sit. Leave short layers free.
  • Move any clip or bun that would sit under the band or a cup. Set the cups over your ears with loose strands clear of the hinges.
  • Adjust the band using its normal slider. If it presses or pulls, take the headphones off and reposition the hair before trying again.

Lift the cups clear before taking them away

  • Hold one cup in each hand. Ease the cups just far enough from your ears to lift the band clear of your hair.
  • Lift the headset away instead of sliding the band backward through the hair. Put it down before adjusting your style.
  • If a strand catches, stop lifting. Lower the headset slightly to release the pull, support it with one hand and gently free the strand with the other.

Keep hair products off the headset

  • Take the headphones off before applying water or styling products. Wait until the hair is dry before putting them back on.
  • For routine exterior dust, use a soft dry lint-free cloth. Check the cleaning instructions for your model before using a damp cloth or cleaning the pads.
  • Keep sprays and liquids away from openings. If you find sticky product on the headset, use the model’s cleaning method rather than a stronger cleaner.

Use hair products after the headphones come off

A refresher when water alone is not enough

For a few flattened waves or curls, try water first. If you use a refresher, choose one whose label allows that dry-hair use and follow its directions. Keep the headphones on a separate dry surface and let the hair dry before putting them back on.

Condition tangled lengths at your next wash

After shampooing, condition wet lengths following the label. Gently detangle curls or coils while conditioned, then rinse fully. For straight hair, rinse, then let hair partly dry before combing. Start at the ends, support above tangles and stop if the comb catches.

Two optional ways to manage your hair

A woman supports her low ponytail with her left hand while her right fingers release the opened loop of a mauve fabric scrunchie around the base.

Try a loose ponytail below the band

If long hair keeps reaching the hinges, try a loose low ponytail on dry, detangled hair. Keep its tie clear of the band and cups, and check that turning your head does not pull. Short layers can stay out.

Reshape only the flattened waves or curls

With the headphones put aside, choose the sections you want to reshape. The full method shows separate dampening options, gentle scrunching and drying. Use just one dampening option, then let the hair dry fully before wearing the headphones again.
