Tie a loose ponytail
Gather dry, loose hair into a low or mid-height ponytail and fasten it with a soft fabric-covered tie that holds without pulling at the roots.

Step by step
STEP 1 OF 4Gather the dry hair
- Remove any pins or clips, place a soft fabric-covered tie around one wrist, and let the dry hair hang loose.
- Use both open hands to gather the hair toward a low or mid-height position while smoothing only with your palms.
- Let short layers stay free instead of pulling them into the bundle.
STEP 2 OF 4Fasten with the soft tie
- Hold the gathered bundle at its base with one hand and slide the tie off your wrist with the other.
- Open the tie around the bundle. If another pass is needed, twist the tie and guide the whole bundle through with your free hand.
- Stop as soon as it holds without squeezing the bundle or pulling the roots; change tie size if it feels tight.
STEP 3 OF 4Check the roots
- Run your fingertips around the front, sides and nape while the other hand steadies the ponytail.
- The roots should rest without pain, stinging or visible pulling at the scalp.
- If anything feels or looks pulled, take the tie off and gather lower, looser or with a larger soft tie.
STEP 4 OF 4Unwind and remove the tie
- Support the ponytail close to its base with one hand so the tie does not tug the roots.
- Use the other hand to open or unwind each loop of the tie around the bundle.
- Slide the opened tie off the free ends. Stop and free any caught strands instead of pulling the tie through them.
About 30–60 sec hands-on for gathering, fastening, checking and later undoing one loose ponytail. Start with dry, detangled hair; wear time is separate.
You’re done when…
The ponytail held without root pulling during wear, and the tie has been fully opened or unwound and removed without dragging through caught hair.
