Choose a topper that fits comfortably.
Check the base, clips and color before buying.

A clip-in topper covers part of your head and blends with your own hair. Choosing one means checking where its clips will grip, how the lengths blend and whether you can put it on and remove it comfortably.

What is going on

A woman inspects the underside and perimeter clips of a detached crown topper.

Check where every clip will sit

The base is the fabric underside that holds the topper’s hair. Its size must cover the area you want while placing every clip in hair that can hold it comfortably. Ask the fitter to show you those positions on your head.

Try the exact piece before choosing

During a permitted try-on, check the front edge, part and lengths together. Turn your head gently and notice any pulling. Ask the fitter to show you how to reach every clip, then practice removing the piece yourself before you buy.

What helps, day to day

Check the color beside the hair it will meet

  • Compare the piece or its supplier’s sample with the hair around your face and exposed lengths in daylight and indoor light.
  • If it covers your roots, ask where to compare its color.
  • Matching only the ends can mislead.

Take the topper off if a clip pulls

  • Support the base, open every clip and gently free caught hair before lifting it off.
  • Have the fit checked before trying again.
  • Avoid backcombing a sparse area or adding glue to make the clips hold; ask about another design if needed.

Include fitting and care in the cost

  • Before cutting, coloring or altering the piece, check the return terms.
  • Ask for its fiber type, cleaning method and storage instructions.
  • Include fitting, an agreed cut and care supplies in your budget, and check that you can manage the drying time.

Wash your own scalp with the topper off

Remove the topper before washing your own hair. Choose your wash routine around scalp oil, dirt and product buildup. Clean the topper separately with products and a method approved for its fiber and base.

Condition your own lengths for easier handling

Use conditioner on your own hair where it tangles, following the product’s rinse-out or leave-in instructions. Detangle and style the topper separately before fitting it. Keep extra oil or conditioner away from the clip areas.

Putting on and removing your topper

Practice fastening and releasing each clip

Use a fitted clip-only topper with front, rear and side clips, and enough hair beneath each one. The method separates fastening, blending, opening every clip and lifting the piece away. Practice removing it before wearing it out.

When to get help

Signs that need more than routine care

  • If thinning continues, a bald patch appears, or your scalp is sore or has sores, see a medical professional. Leave the topper off sore areas and avoid clips where there is too little hair to hold them comfortably.
