Vary bun position

If you usually wear a bun in the same spot, changing its position can vary where the hair is gathered and held. Keep each bun loose and include time with your hair down.

A woman with a loose bun low at the nape lightly checks her hairline with one hand while the other arm is lowered.

Step by step

  1. A woman supports her central auburn bun with one hand while opening a navy soft tie for removal.
    STEP 1 OF 3

    Release the previous bun

    • Support the bun with one hand. Use the other to unwind every turn of the tie and guide the opened loop off the coil.
    • Let the lengths fall loose before gathering again. If your hair is already down, start from there; do not slide a tied bun to a new spot.
    • Keep the soft tie on one wrist. Start with dry, detangled hair and let your arms rest before making the next bun.
  2. A woman holds her hair at a lower nape anchor while guiding the loose tail around the base, with a soft tie on her wrist.
    STEP 2 OF 3

Choose a new anchor and coil loosely

    • Try a lower, higher or slightly off-center spot than last time, within comfortable reach. Leave short layers free rather than pulling them in.
    • Gather there with both hands, then hold the base with one hand. If it pulls before you tie it, release it and choose another position or leave it down.
    • Use your free hand to twist the tail loosely and wrap it around the held base. Support the forming coil without tightening the roots.

The photos show a central bun being remade lower at the nape. A high bun is optional; choose only a position your hair reaches comfortably.

  3. A woman with a loose bun low at the nape lightly checks her hairline with one hand while the other arm is lowered.
    STEP 3 OF 3

Secure it and check for pulling

    • Support the coil with one hand; use the other to open the soft tie from your wrist around it. Add a turn only if it holds without squeezing.
    • Let go, turn your head gently, and check the hairline and nape for pulling. If it slips or feels tight, undo it and change tie size or leave your hair down.
    • When finished wearing it, support the bun and fully unwind the tie as in step 1. Let the hair fall loose and put the tie away.

About 1–3 minutes of handling to undo one bun, gather and secure it at a new anchor, check comfort, and later take it down. Detangling, drying and time worn are separate.

Editorial estimate for one familiar solo change with the tie nearby, not measured testing. Length, density, reach and retries can take longer.

You’re done when…

The bun sits at a different anchor from the previous wear, stays in place with your hands off, and lets you turn your head without pulling. If it cannot, leave your hair down.
