Straighten dry hair with a flat iron
A section-by-section method for a temporary straighter finish on completely dry hair.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 3Prepare dry sections
- Read your iron’s manual; set up a dry work area away from water with its stand or a suitable heatproof mat.
- Apply a compatible heat protectant as directed and let all hair dry completely. Detangle before heating.
- Clip upper hair away; bring a small lower section forward. Practice the pass with the iron unplugged and cold.
STEP 2 OF 3Glide toward the ends
- Select the lowest effective setting permitted by your manual and hair condition; allow its directed warm-up.
- Hold the section apart with one hand. Close the plates on hair with the other, leaving clear space from your skin.
- Release the guiding hand from the heated path; keep the iron moving toward the ends, then open it to release.
- Work through fresh sections. Do not pause closed plates on hair or repeatedly chase a perfectly flat finish.
STEP 3 OF 3Cool and put away
- Stop if hair snags, smokes or sizzles; open the plates, switch off and reassess only after cooling.
- Switch off, unplug by the plug and leave the iron on its safe rest out of reach while both tool and hair cool.
- Remove section clips. Clean and store the cooled tool as its manual directs, with the cord loosely arranged.
About 15–40 min hands-on for setup, cold practice, sectioned flat-ironing and cleanup. Start with completely dry, detangled hair. Add protectant drying, warm-up, cooling and breaks.
You’re done when…
Your chosen sections are released and cool, and the unplugged iron has cooled on its safe rest. A smooth appearance is not evidence of damage-free use.
