Set curls with cloth strips
Clean cotton strips can hold a small damp-hair set without a heated tool. Try one reachable panel first and leave enough loose fabric to undo each tie easily.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 3Prepare the fabric and damp section
- Choose clean, smooth cotton strips with no loose threads or hard seams. Leave enough length for a roll plus two ends you can tie and untie.
- Start with damp detangled hair. Clip other hair away and bring one small front or side section within easy reach.
STEP 2 OF 3Fold, roll and tie the strip
- Lay the section’s tips across the middle of a strip. Fold the fabric lengthwise over them so the tips lie smooth inside the fold.
- Hold the fabric ends and roll the folded middle upward with the hair around it. Stop at a comfortable height before the roots pull.
- Tie the two fabric ends together in an easy-to-undo knot. Keep hair out of the knot and the tie away from your scalp. Repeat only where you can reach.
STEP 3 OF 3Dry through, then untie and unwind
- Let the set air-dry. Open one reachable roll gently to check the inner hair; if it is damp, reroll without tightening and allow more time.
- When fully dry, undo each fabric knot and reverse the roll toward the ends. Do not slide or pull the strip through the curl.
- Arrange the released hair gently with your fingers. Collect all strips and clips, then wash and dry the fabric before storage.
One reachable front or side panel, including setup and release. A whole head takes longer.
You’re done when…
Every strip is untied and unwound from a fully dry section, with no fabric or loose thread left in the hair.
