Make comb coils
Use a smooth styling comb to shape one small detangled section into a coil. Keep the teeth clear of neighboring hair and release the tool as soon as it catches.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 3Isolate a freely detangled section
- Begin on damp detangled loose hair after any chosen label-directed preparation. Check that the comb has smooth intact teeth.
- Separate a small reachable tuft and keep neighboring hair aside. If the comb cannot pass through freely, detangle separately before shaping.
STEP 2 OF 3Rotate and slide the comb out
- Catch only the isolated tuft with the comb teeth near its base, clear of skin. Keep the root relaxed and the rest of the hair out of the teeth.
- Rotate the comb gently as you move toward the tip, guiding the free end with your other hand if needed. Do not wind hair around the comb body.
- Slide the teeth clear of the tip to release the coil. For a catch, stop and gently reverse the last movement; never tug the comb out.
STEP 3 OF 3Let the coil dry and release later
- Let the coil rest and air-dry. Remove any sectioning clips and put the comb aside; do not keep tightening the root as it dries.
- When you want to undo the style, ease the spiral apart with your fingers from the free end toward the root. Do not comb through an intact tight coil.
- If it resists, stop dry handling and use your usual label-directed wash, conditioning and detangling process. Clear shed hair from the comb and clean it as directed.
One small practice coil including setup and later release; a full head and detangling require additional time.
You’re done when…
The comb slides free, leaving a comfortable small spiral that can air-dry without scalp tension or trapped neighboring strands.
