Make a turned ponytail

Add a turned shape to a loose low ponytail using your fingers. Keep room above the tie so the lengths pass through without catching or pulling.

Step by step

  1. A man secures his own low ponytail with a fabric-covered tie.
    STEP 1 OF 3

    Tie a loose low ponytail

    • Start with dry detangled loose hair. Put a smooth fabric-covered tie within reach and sit with room to move both arms.
    • Gather one low ponytail. Tie it comfortably, then ease the band down a little to leave slack above it.
  2. A man opens a gap above the ponytail tie with his fingers before turning the tail through it.
    STEP 2 OF 3

Open the gap and turn the tail

    • Hold the base with one hand. Use the other hand’s fingers to open a gap in the hair immediately above the tie.
    • Keep the gap open. Lift the free tail up, pass its ends over the tie and feed them downward through the gap toward your nape.
    • Draw the lengths through gently. Widen the gap if they catch; do not yank or tighten the base to hide an uneven turn.
  3. A man supports a turned ponytail while loosening its tie for removal.
    STEP 3 OF 3

Check the turn and undo gently

    • Let the tail hang and check the base by turning your head. Loosen or undo it if either side pulls.
    • For removal, support the tail and unwind the tie first. Ease the turned sections apart with your fingers instead of pulling the tie through the twist.
    • Separate any snags and put the tie away.

One turned ponytail including setup and later release; detangling is separate.

You’re done when…

The tail hangs below two inward turns, with a comfortable base and no strands trapped painfully in the tie.
