Make a rope braid

Make a two-section rope from a comfortable low side ponytail. Work a little at a time, keeping the individual twists and the shared wrap in opposite directions.

Step by step

  1. A woman divides her own low side ponytail into two sections before rope braiding.
    STEP 1 OF 3

    Make a comfortable base

    • Start with dry detangled loose hair. Keep two smooth removable ties within reach.
    • Gather a low side ponytail and tie its base comfortably. Bring the free tail in front of that shoulder and split it into two similar sections.
  2. A woman wraps two individually twisted sections in the opposite direction to make a rope braid.
    STEP 2 OF 3

    Twist the strands, then counter-wrap

    • Turn both individual sections in the same direction for a short length. For example, twist each section to the left.
    • Wrap the two sections together in the opposite direction: with left-twisted sections, bring the left section over the right. Exchange hand holds.
    • Keep turning each free section to the left and wrapping the pair to the right as you move down. Hold gently; stop before the hair kinks or roots pull.
    • Leave enough untwisted tip to hold safely. Support the rope with one hand while securing its end with the second tie.
  3. A woman supports her rope braid while unwinding its end tie.
    STEP 3 OF 3

    Check and unwind in order

    • Lower your hands and turn your head gently. Loosen or undo a pulling base; do not keep winding the rope tighter.
    • For takedown, support the free tail and unwind its end tie. Reverse the shared wraps, then let each individual strand untwist.
    • Once the lengths are loose, unwind the base tie and ease apart any small catches with your fingers. Put away both ties.

One low side rope braid including setup and later takedown; detangling is separate.

Unmeasured editorial handling estimate for the stated scope. Familiarity, access and the item or hair being handled change the time.

You’re done when…

The two strands wind together in a clear rope, held at the end without root pulling and removable by unwinding the tie and crossings.
