Make a loose knotted side row
Try a few large, easy-to-open knots along one side when your hair separates readily. Keep the loops loose enough to undo by hand and stop if the style slips or tangles.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 3Choose a side panel and two sections
- Detangle dry hair and clip everything outside a short side panel away. Divide a small starting section into two long tails.
- Check that both tails can pass through a loose loop without catching. Choose a simpler style if they tangle or cannot be held separately.
STEP 2 OF 3Make loose knots with small pickups
- Cross the right tail over the left. Bring that right tail behind the left and through the open loop, then ease the two tails apart without cinching.
- Add a small piece of nearby panel hair to each tail. Make another loose overhand knot below the first, keeping the same crossing direction.
- Repeat only along the reachable panel. Stop before tails are too short, a loop tightens or hair catches; use the soft tie below the last comfortable knot.
STEP 3 OF 3Check comfort and open knots in reverse
- Release the sectioning clip and check the roots. Undo any knot that pulls or slips; do not tighten it to make the style hold.
- After wear, remove the end tie. Hold the lowest knot open and guide its tail back through, then repeat upward. Free small catches with your fingers.
- Check that all loops and added sections are released. If a knot will not open gently, stop pulling and seek help with removal.
One reachable braid, including setup and takedown; practice may take longer.
You’re done when…
A short row of comfortable knots ends in a soft tie, and every knot is later opened from the bottom upward.
