Make a flat twist
Make one reachable flat twist from the front hairline toward the side of your head. Feed in small slices, keep the roots comfortable and finish the free ends before letting the section dry.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 3Choose a reachable strip
- Start with damp detangled loose hair after any label-directed product preparation. Keep a clip within reach if needed.
- Separate a narrow strip from the front hairline toward above one ear. Keep the hair outside that strip out of the way.
- Take a small tuft at the front of the strip and split only that tuft into two similar strands. Leave the rest of the strip loose.
STEP 2 OF 3Cross and feed along the strip
- Cross the lower strand over the upper one, keeping the base loose enough to feel comfortable.
- Hold both strands in one hand. With the other, pick up a small slice of loose hair from the strip and add it to the strand now underneath.
- Cross that lower strand over again and exchange hand support. Repeat the pickup and crossing down the reachable strip; never pull to flatten the roots.
- At the end of the strip, keep crossing the two free strands to the tips. Let the ends curl together gently rather than fastening the roots tighter.
STEP 3 OF 3Dry, check and release
- Remove any sectioning clip. Let the worked hair air-dry and leave the twist alone while it sets. Undo it whenever the roots pull.
- For a twist-out, wait until the whole section, including the root and inner hair, feels dry. Damp sections need more time.
- Start at the ends and reverse each crossing with your fingers, working toward the root. Ease the fed-in slices apart rather than pulling them sideways.
One front or side flat twist including setup and later release; whole-head styling and detangling take additional time.
You’re done when…
The twist follows its section without pulling, its ends stay together comfortably and the worked hair is fully dry before an optional twist-out.
