Put on and remove a fitted halo extension

Place a correctly sized wire-and-clip halo, fasten its clips, settle the wire and cover it with your own hair. Open all attachments before lifting it off.

Step by step

  1. A woman gathers the upper section of her dry hair into a loose crown bun, leaving the lower hair loose.
    STEP 1 OF 8

Tie the upper hair out of the way

    • Gather the upper hair around your crown into a loose bun, leaving the front pieces out as your halo’s fitting diagram shows.
    • Keep the lower hair loose. The wire will cross the exposed crown and the wide strip of extension hair will sit around the back.
  2. A woman lowers a halo extension loop over her loose crown bun while supporting both weft ends.
    STEP 2 OF 8

Lower the halo over the bun

    • Open the halo’s clips while it is off your head. Hold the ends of the top seam and lower the wire loop over your loose bun.
    • Let the wide hair piece sit around the back of your head in the position shown by its fitting diagram. Keep supporting it with one hand.
  3. A woman supports the halo’s back seam with one hand while pressing one of its snap clips closed with the other.
    STEP 3 OF 8

    Fasten the halo’s clips

    • Keep one hand under the top seam. With your other hand, slide a clip’s teeth into the hair beneath it and press the clip closed.
    • Repeat for every clip on the halo before settling the wire. The seam should rest comfortably without stretching the hair; open any clip that tugs.
  4. With the upper hair in a bun, a woman lightly positions the clear halo wire across the exposed crown.
    STEP 4 OF 8

Settle the wire across your crown

    • Use your fingertips to place the wire across the exposed crown in the position shown by your piece’s instructions. Do not pull it tighter.
    • If the wire presses or the hair piece will not stay in place comfortably, take it off using the removal steps below and check its size.
  5. A woman releases her upper hair and uses her fingers to lay it over the halo wire.
    STEP 5 OF 8

Release your upper hair over the wire

    • Undo the loose bun. Use your fingers to lay your upper hair over the wire and the top of the extension, gently freeing any hair caught underneath.
    • Use both mirrors to check the sides and back, then put the handheld one down. Turn your head gently; take the piece off if it pulls or presses.
  6. A woman supports the halo seam while opening a snap clip and easing its teeth clear of her hair.
    STEP 6 OF 8

    Open and free every clip

    • For removal, gather the upper hair into a loose bun again and clip stray hair aside. Find the wire and every clip before moving the piece.
    • Support the seam with one hand. Snap each clip open with the other and ease its teeth clear of the hair. Do not pull the piece down to release it.
  7. A woman holds the ends of the freed halo seam and lifts its open clips and wire loop above her crown bun.
    STEP 7 OF 8

Lift the freed loop over your bun

    • Check that every clip is open and no hair is caught. Hold the ends of the seam and lift the wire loop up and over your sectioned upper hair.
    • Keep the clips clear of your hair as you bring the whole piece away from your head.
  8. A woman supports the fully detached halo extension over a clean towel.
    STEP 8 OF 8

Set the piece down and put it away

    • Lay the detached halo on a clean towel. Undo your bun and remove any sectioning clips.
    • Check that the extension hair, seam, wire and clips are dry. Put the piece away using its own storage instructions; leave it out to dry if needed.

About 5–12 minutes to put on an already sized halo and later remove it. Allow extra time for first-time practice; detangling and wire sizing are separate.

Unmeasured editorial handling estimate for the stated scope. Familiarity, access and the item or hair being handled change the time.

You’re done when…

The fitted halo sits without pulling during wear. After removal, the wire and every clip are free of your hair and the piece is dry before storage.
