Detangle with a wide-tooth comb

Choose this when you want a simple tool to work through ordinary tangles in controlled stages. Starting at the tips keeps you from dragging a snag down the full length.

Woman supports a damp wavy-curly section while a wide-tooth comb begins at the lowest hair tips.

Step by step

  1. Woman supports a damp wavy-curly section while a wide-tooth comb begins at the lowest hair tips.
    STEP 1 OF 3

Set up and start at the tips

    • Choose the right state: partly dry for straight or loose wavy hair; damp or wet for curly or coily hair. Follow any conditioner label.
    • Bring one manageable section toward a shoulder. Hold it well above the tips so your hand takes the movement.
    • With the teeth pointing toward the floor, make short downward passes only through the lowest tips.
  2. Woman supports a damp hair section above the middle while a wide-tooth comb moves down through already-cleared ends.
    STEP 2 OF 3

    Move upward in stages

    • Once the tips pass freely, move your supporting hand and the comb a little higher on the same section.
    • Comb down through the already-cleared ends. Keep the section relaxed instead of stretching it taut.
    • If the comb stops, lift it out. Loosen the snag with your fingers or restart below it; do not push or saw through.

The image shows an in-progress middle pass after the tips are free. It is not the starting level.

  3. Woman makes a gentle finishing pass with a wide-tooth comb through a supported damp hair section.
    STEP 3 OF 3

    Check the whole section

    • When each stage feels clear, make one gentle pass from the highest safely reached point through the ends.
    • Stop when the comb moves without catching; extra passes are unnecessary. Move to the next section and repeat.
    • Finish the product step as labeled. Remove shed strands from the comb, then clean and dry it according to its care directions.

The image shows a finishing pass through an already worked section, not where combing begins.

About 5–20 min hands-on for sectioning, combing ordinary tangles from the ends upward and tool cleanup. Product dwell, rinsing the conditioner and the rest of wash day are separate; reach the mode's starting state first.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. Length, density and tangle count change time substantially; stop at pain or a fixed mat rather than forcing a deadline.

You’re done when…

The wide-tooth comb moves through the selected section in one gentle pass without catching or pulling. Finish any conditioner step exactly as labeled and stop rather than forcing a remaining tight knot.
