Check for product residue before judging flakes

Document what you see, complete one ordinary wash without adding new scalp products, then compare after drying; the check cannot diagnose dandruff or another condition.

Finger pads perform one ordinary scalp wash without a scrub, clarifier or medicated treatment.

Step by step

  1. Dry hands record where loose material appears at the roots before adding any product.
    STEP 1 OF 3

    Document before adding anything

    • At a fixed mirror in bright light, check reachable front or side areas for loose material on strands, roots or visible scalp.
    • Record recent root products and when they were applied; do not scrape or pick.
    • If the scalp is painful, very red, broken or worsening, stop the check and seek individual advice.
  2. Finger pads perform one ordinary scalp wash without a scrub, clarifier or medicated treatment.
    STEP 2 OF 3

    Do one ordinary wash

    • Use your usual ordinary rinse-out shampoo, not a new clarifier, scrub or medicated treatment.
    • Massage gently at the scalp with finger pads and rinse until no visible suds remain.
    • Condition only where your normal directions place it, then dry by your usual gentle method.
  3. Dry fingertips part the same root area in similar light for a non-diagnostic comparison.
    STEP 3 OF 3

    Compare only after drying

    • In similar light after hair and scalp are dry, look at the same reachable areas.
    • Record whether the loose material is gone, reduced, unchanged or worse; do not label the cause.
    • Return to normal care or seek professional advice if it persists, worsens or comes with symptoms.

About 8–15 min hands-on for the before note, one ordinary shampoo-and-condition wash and the after-drying comparison. Add air-drying or your separate active drying method.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. The wash is part of this comparison guide; note-taking alone is only a small part of the work.

You’re done when…

A before/after observation was made under similar conditions after one ordinary wash, without diagnosing the material or escalating products.
