Apply styling mousse

Use this method to spread styling mousse through damp hair without leaving most of it in the first section you touch. Apply it only where your product directs, then shape your hair for drying.

Step by step

    Check where and how to use your mousse

    • Read the directions before opening the container. Check the amount, dispenser position and whether to apply at the roots, through the lengths or both.
    • Start with detangled, damp loose hair if the label allows it. Wash your hands and clear a reachable spot to put the container down.

    This sequence uses a leave-in mousse that needs no heat. Follow any treatment aftercare restrictions; mousse is not a detangling step.

    Dispense into one palm, then put it down

    • Shake only if instructed and hold the container in the position its directions show. Keep the nozzle away from your face.
    • Dispense the directed starting amount into one palm. Set the container on the counter so both hands are free.

    Pump foam and pressurized mousse may need different handling. Do not copy the pictured amount or container angle.

    Spread the foam over both hands

    • Lightly press your palms together, then separate them. Let the foam spread across your palms and fingers.
    • Spread a concentrated mound between your hands before touching the hair. There is no need to whip up more foam or keep a white layer visible.

    Apply near the roots if directed

    • If your label includes roots, lift a small, reachable section with one hand. Work the foam on your other hand through the hair near its base.
    • Release that section and move to the next root area. Switch hands as needed; keep the movement in the hair rather than rubbing foam over the scalp.

    Skip this step for a lengths-only product. Use a fixed mirror if helpful, and work only where you can reach without straining.

    Smooth through the lengths if directed

    • If your label includes lengths, bring one section forward. Place it lightly between your palms below the roots, then slide toward the ends.
    • Release it and repeat on the other sections, including the back. Use smaller sections if the inside is hard to reach; add mousse only as its directions allow.

    Skip this step for a roots-only product. If your hands catch, stop and free the strands gently rather than pulling through the snag.

    Shape, then release the hair

    • For waves or curls, if scrunching suits your product and style, cup the ends in a palm, lift toward the roots and gently close your hand around the hair.
    • Open your hand and lower it to release the section. Repeat where wanted. If foam remains in one patch, spread it gently over that section before leaving the hair alone.

    Scrunching is optional. For a smoother finish, leave the lengths hanging after smoothing. Remove any sectioning clips used during application.

    Put the mousse away and wash your hands

    • Follow the container directions for cleaning the dispenser and closing or storing it. Wipe up any foam on the counter.
    • Wash the product from your hands, then begin the drying method your mousse allows. Application is finished; the hair is still damp.

About 2–5 minutes of hands-on application and cleanup on damp, detangled hair. More sections or unfamiliar handling can take longer; washing and drying are separate.
