Keep hair clear of glasses and mask loops.
Less catching and pressure around your ears.

A strand caught in a glasses hinge can pull every time you turn your head. A clip under a mask loop can press behind your ear. Clear the hair and clips before putting either item on, then release anything caught before taking it away.

Why hair catches and clips press

A woman with long gray hair holds removed glasses in both hands and examines the hinge above a dry table.

A damaged hinge can keep catching hair

Check your glasses off your head if the same hinge keeps catching strands. A rough edge, loose part or frame that presses needs an optician’s attention. Avoid bending the arms or covering the hinge with tape.

Give clips their own space

A clip underneath a glasses arm or mask loop can press against your head. Choose a spot above or behind the ear that leaves a gap between them. If the hair cannot reach without pulling, leave it loose or choose a closer spot.

Clear the hair, then remove each item gently

Move side hair clear before putting things on

  • With glasses and mask off, sweep the side hair away from your ears with your fingers. Use a loose pin or clip only if it helps the section stay there.
  • Put on your mask and glasses with hair clear of the hinges and loops. Keep clips away from where either item rests.
  • Follow your mask’s fitting and handling directions, keeping its normal strap arrangement and coverage. Do not hook loops around hair clips. Required workplace fitting and removal procedures take priority.
A woman holds both arms of her glasses near the hinges and slides the frame forward clear of her ears.

Slide glasses forward with both hands

  • Hold one arm near its hinge in each hand. Slide the glasses forward until the curved tips clear your ears and hair.
  • Stop if a strand pulls. Move the frame back slightly to ease the pull, support it with one hand and gently free the strand with the other.
  • If a mask loop lies over a glasses arm, unhook that loop first. Wait until you are somewhere you can remove your mask.

Unhook the mask loops before moving the mask

  • When you are somewhere you can remove the mask, clean your hands. Hold the ear loops rather than the front of the mask.
  • Ease each loop clear of the ear, keeping it away from clips and loose strands. Leave the mask close to your face while checking that both loops are free.
  • If hair catches, stop pulling on the loop. Give it some slack and free the strand before continuing.

Move the mask away from your hair

  • With both loops free, hold them and bring the mask forward, away from your face and hair. Do not drag a loop through the lengths.
  • Put a disposable mask in the bin. For a reusable cloth mask, use a breathable bag if clean and dry, or a sealed bag until washing if damp or dirty.
  • Clean your hands before detangling. Work on remaining tangles with the mask off and put away, keeping hair products off its fabric.

Rinse-out conditioner for wash-time tangles

After shampooing, condition wet lengths following the label. Gently detangle curls or coils while conditioned, then rinse fully. For straight hair, rinse, then let hair partly dry before combing. Start at the ends, support above tangles and stop if the comb catches.

Browse rinse-out conditioners. The consultation uses your hair details and treatment history to compare conditioner options.

Leave-in for lengths that still feel rough

If washed lengths still feel rough or catch easily, a leave-in may help. Use a small amount on the lengths and ends, with the damp or dry starting state specified on its label. Keep it away from eyes, frames and mask fabric.

Browse leave-in conditioners. Tell the consultation which leave-ins felt useful or heavy, and how much you used.

Optional ways to hold a side section back

Pin a short front section back

For a growing fringe or short front section on dry, detangled hair, choose a pinning point it reaches without pulling. Keep the pin clear of the glasses arm and ear loop. Remove or reposition it if it presses.

Use a side comb only where it fits

A curved side comb is an alternative for a small, dry, detangled section. Leave space between it and the glasses arm or loop. The full method shows how to turn the comb into the hair and support the section when removing it.
