Finding a stylist gets harder when you need privacy, particular products or a braid or length kept intact. Ask about the service before booking, then confirm the details with the person doing it. Those answers help you decide whether to go ahead.

What is going on

An adult with short coils discusses a proposed hair service with a stylist.

Ask who will do the work

Describe your hair, previous treatments and the service you want. Ask which stylist regularly does that work and whether they can show relevant examples. Discuss how they would handle your hair, including any braids or added hair, rather than relying on the salon’s general portfolio.

Check privacy at each part of the visit

Ask where consultation, washing and drying happen, including any walk between rooms. Check who can enter and whether windows, mirrors or cameras overlook the space. If you need particular staff, confirm who will wash, dry and style your hair.

What helps, day to day

A cut or takedown is being assumed

  • Point out the length, sections or braids you want kept.
  • Ask the stylist to show where they plan to cut or what they need to undo.
  • Agree any change first.
  • If the service requires more change than you want, choose another option.

A proposed product conflicts with your preferences

  • Name the ingredient, fragrance or certification you avoid or require.
  • Ask to see the exact product label before use.
  • If it leaves a question unanswered, check with the manufacturer or choose a known alternative.
  • Ask whether you can bring your own product.

The room or stylist has changed

  • Pause before uncovering or starting the service.
  • Ask what has changed and whether your original requests can still be met.
  • You can accept the new plan, choose a smaller service or rebook.
  • Ask about any fee before deciding.

Products, by the job they do

A woman uses a tablet displaying product directions beside a capped hair-care bottle at a dry desk.

Confirm the shampoo plan before you wash at home

Ask whether you should arrive with freshly washed hair or leave shampooing to the salon. Give the stylist the name of your usual shampoo and mention any past reaction. Check before using a clarifying shampoo or changing your routine for the appointment.

Browse cleansing products. Bring the shampoos you are choosing between to the consultation, along with what you liked or disliked about them.

Discuss conditioner before detangling

Tell the stylist which conditioner helps you detangle and how you normally use it. Ask whether the planned service needs different preparation, including whether to arrive with products in your hair. If detangling pulls or hurts, ask them to pause and change the approach.

Browse rinse-out conditioners. Tell the consultation what you want from a conditioner and what you disliked about previous ones.

How to do it

A covered client and a stylist review a care agreement beside an unused phone at a salon table.

Keep the service and photo permissions separate

Ask the stylist to repeat the service plan and the changes you have ruled out. Agree how you will ask them to pause. Tell them separately whether they may take photographs and whether you allow those photographs to be posted or shared.

Book a conversation before a major service

Ask for a consultation first if the proposed cut, treatment or takedown feels uncertain. Check its price and what it includes. Bring your main questions and leave with the service, cost and preparation clear. Choose another stylist if your requests are dismissed.

  • Who has experience with the service I want?
  • How do I explain what must stay untouched or private?
  • What should I confirm before paying for the appointment?

Share your hair history, the service you are considering and the preferences you want respected. The consultation can help you organize that information and choose questions to take to the salon. Confirm the proposed service and any changes directly with your stylist.
