Weave a round four-strand side braid

Try this cord-shaped braid in a low side ponytail when you can hold four separate sections. Keep two sections in each hand and alternate the same movement from each side.

Step by step

  1. An adult holds four separate sections below a comfortable side-ponytail tie, two in each hand.
    STEP 1 OF 2

Hold four sections and alternate the outer passes

    • Make a comfortable low side ponytail in dry detangled hair. Divide it into four equal sections, two per hand; left and right mean your hands.
    • Take the outer right section behind the inner right and inner left sections. Bring it forward between the two left sections, then back to the inside of your right hand.
    • Take the outer left section behind the inner left and inner right sections. Bring it forward between the two right sections, then back to the inside of your left hand.
    • Repeat, resetting two sections in each hand after each pass. Stop before short ends become difficult to hold; undo a confused pass instead of tightening it.
  2. An adult gently checks loose lengths after undoing the round braid and removing both ties.
    STEP 2 OF 2

Tie the end and undo from the bottom

    • Hold the last crossing and secure all four sections with the second soft tie. Let the braid hang and check for pulling at the base.
    • After wear, remove the end tie. Open the last crossing, then the one above, until all four sections are free. Remove the base tie and finger-release any catches.

One reachable braid, including setup and takedown; practice may take longer.

You’re done when…

The four-section braid is held by an accessible soft end tie and can be opened fully from its end.
