Shape a low figure-eight bun

Use a low ponytail as the anchor for this shaped bun. Pin each curve as you make it, keeping enough slack to reach and undo the crossing.

Step by step

  1. An adult holds the length of a comfortable low ponytail before shaping the bun.
    STEP 1 OF 3

    Gather a comfortable low ponytail

    • Gently detangle dry hair and gather it low at the nape with one soft tie. Check that the roots feel slack and the entire tail is within reach.
    • Twist the upper half of the tail counterclockwise just enough to hold it together. Leave the remaining length available for the second curve.
  2. An adult supports the first curved section of a low bun while placing a pin.
    STEP 2 OF 3

Make two curves and the crossing

    • Curve the twisted length around the bottom of the ponytail base and upward. Hold this lower curve with one hand while pinning it with the other.
    • Continue the twist gently and lay it diagonally across the shape, from upper right toward lower left as seen from behind. Pin the crossing.
    • Turn the remaining length upward, then curve it down to form the upper loop. Tuck the end beneath the diagonal and pin it without tightening the roots.
  3. An adult holds released loose hair with the removed pins and base tie on the table.
    STEP 3 OF 3

Check the shape and undo in order

    • Use the rear view to check both curves. Feel for pulling or pin tips; reposition or remove any uncomfortable pin, and undo the style if it will not sit loosely.
    • To take down, locate and remove every pin while supporting the bun. Free the tucked tail, reverse the curves and crossing, then remove the base tie.

One style; learning and removal can take longer.

Unmeasured editorial handling estimate for the stated scope. Familiarity, access and the item or hair being handled change the time.

You’re done when…

Two curves and a diagonal crossing stay in place with comfortable pins, and the tucked tail can be found for release.
