Secure a bun with spiral pins

Coil a loose bun and turn spiral pins into it from opposite sides. Keep the pins from crossing, and reverse their turns one at a time when taking the bun down.

Step by step

  1. A woman supports her own loose bun while turning a spiral pin into its edge.
    STEP 1 OF 2

Coil and turn in separate pins

    • Begin with dry detangled loose hair and two smooth spiral bun pins. Gather a comfortable ponytail in your hand without an elastic.
    • Twist the free length gently and coil it around its base. Tuck the ends under the coil and support the bun with one hand.
    • With the other hand, turn a spiral pin clockwise into one edge, following its directions. Keep it in the hair and clear of your scalp.
    • Insert the second pin from the opposite edge on a separate path. Do not interlock the pins; reverse a pin that catches or needs force.
  2. A woman supports her bun while turning a spiral pin back out for removal.
    STEP 2 OF 2

    Support and unscrew

    • Lower your hands and check for pressure or pulling. Refit or take down an uncomfortable bun.
    • For removal, hold the bun in one hand. Turn the last pin counterclockwise until it comes free; do not pull it straight out.
    • Keep supporting the coil and unscrew the other pin. Unwrap the bun slowly, release tucked ends and put both pins away.

One fastening and later removal, with detangling done beforehand.

You’re done when…

The bun stays comfortably supported, the pins do not interlock and each can be unscrewed without tugging.
