Mold finger waves in a side panel
Practice a small side panel before attempting a full set. One hand holds each ridge while the comb curves the next section in the opposite direction.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 3Prepare one damp side panel
- Choose a clean, damp, detangled panel beside your part. Keep other hair out of the way; the comb must glide without snagging.
- Apply a damp-setting product as its label directs and distribute it through the panel. Do not keep adding product to compensate for tangles.
STEP 2 OF 3Curve, hold and reverse
- Use your free index finger as a guide while the comb curves the panel into a C. Keep the teeth in the hair and away from the scalp.
- Hold the raised edge between your index and middle fingers with light pressure. Comb the hair below it into a C facing the other way.
- Continue this alternating curve down the small panel, holding the previous ridge as you shape the next. Stop if the hair catches or will not bend comfortably.
STEP 3 OF 3Let the panel dry without more shaping
- Set the comb down and let the panel air-dry. Avoid disturbing the ridges; check that the roots and inner hair are dry before touching the shape.
- Release any sectioning clips and leave the dry waves sculpted. When ready to remove the set, wash out the product as directed rather than dragging a comb through stiff hair.
One small reachable panel; a whole-head set and later washing take longer.
You’re done when…
The small panel has dried without further shaping; it can remain sculpted or be washed out according to the setting product directions.
