Make milkmaid braids

Pin two separate braids across the crown for an updo. Braid the sides where you can see them, then lift and fasten each one without pulling at its base.

Step by step

  1. A woman finishes tying two separate side plaits before making milkmaid braids.
    STEP 1 OF 3

    Make two loose side braids

    • Start with detangled dry loose hair. Divide it into left and right halves and bring each half in front of its shoulder.
    • Split one half into three sections. Cross one outer section over the middle, then the other over the new middle; repeat down the length.
    • Secure the end with a soft tie. Braid and tie the other half the same way, keeping both bases comfortable.
  2. A woman holds one plait across her crown while pinning it; the other plait still hangs beside her shoulder.
    STEP 2 OF 3

    Lift and pin each plait

    • Lift one plait across the top of your head. If it cannot reach comfortably, leave the braids down instead.
    • Hold it with one hand while the other slides pins along its edge into the hair beneath. Keep tips clear of skin; secure it before letting go.
    • Lift the second plait alongside the first. Tuck their tied ends beneath the opposite plait and pin each end while supporting it.
  3. A woman supports one of her pinned milkmaid braids while removing a bobby pin.
    STEP 3 OF 3

    Check and release in order

    • Lower your hands and turn your head. Remove or reposition any pin that pokes; undo the style if the bases pull.
    • For takedown, support one plait, remove its pins and lower it gently. Repeat for the other and check that no pins remain.
    • Unwind both ties, open each braid from the ends upward and put away all fasteners.

Two side braids, crown pinning, setup and later takedown. Detangling is separate; learning the hand sequence can take longer.

You’re done when…

Both plaits stay up when your hands lower, with comfortable roots and all pin tips clear of skin.
