Make a bow with your own hair

Make a bow-shaped accent from a section of your own ponytail. Choose this when the section folds comfortably and you can support its wings while pinning.

Step by step

  1. An adult separates a portion of a comfortable low ponytail before forming a hair bow.
    STEP 1 OF 3

Make the base and folded loop

    • Start with dry detangled hair. Secure a comfortable low ponytail with a soft tie, then wind a narrow strand around that tie and pin its end in hair.
    • Separate a portion of the ponytail for the bow and fasten it near the base with a second small soft tie. On its final turn, leave a folded loop instead of pulling it through.
    • Leave enough tail for a narrow center cover. Keep the remaining ponytail hanging free; the bow uses only the separated section.
  2. An adult supports two hair-bow loops while placing a narrow center strand over their small tie.
    STEP 2 OF 3

Divide the loop and cover its center

    • Split the folded loop into two wings. Hold one open with your fingers while pinning it to the base; repeat on the other side without tugging the roots.
    • Take a narrow strand from beneath the bow’s small tie and lay it over the center. Pin it behind the center with the points kept in hair.
    • Fold the cover strand’s remaining end into a small loop, tuck it inside one wing and pin it. Check that the wings stay supported and no pin presses.
  3. An adult has released the hair bow and places removed pins and ties on a towel.
    STEP 3 OF 3

Unpin and unfold before opening ties

    • Support the bow and find every pin by touch. Remove the tucked-end and center-cover pins, unfold the center strand, then remove both wings’ pins.
    • Open the bow’s small tie one turn at a time. Ease the folded section through only after the tie is loose, freeing any caught hair with your fingers.
    • Remove the pin and strand covering the main ponytail tie. Unwind that tie, let your hair settle and collect all pins and ties.

Styling and later release; preceding detangling is separate.

You’re done when…

Two supported loops sit at the ponytail base with a center strand covering the small tie, without root pulling or pin discomfort.
