Lace a ribbon between two braids
Decorate two neighboring braids where you can see and reach their free lengths. Keep a small gap between them so the ribbon decorates without drawing on the roots.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 3Set two braids and center the ribbon
- Bring two neighboring finished braid lengths forward comfortably. Check that both end ties are secure and the roots stay slack.
- Thread one ribbon end through a visible upper gap in each braid. Slide the ribbon until its midpoint bridges the gap and its two tails are similar in length.
STEP 2 OF 3Cross and lace one pair at a time
- Cross the two ribbon tails in the space between the braids. Feed each tail through the next lower gap in the opposite braid, using your fingers.
- Repeat downward through matching gaps. Leave the crossings loose enough that the braids keep their natural spacing; stop for a catch or root pull.
- End before the braid ties and tie the ribbon tails into an easy-to-undo bow. Tuck excessive tails gently into the lacing instead of cutting them near hair.
STEP 3 OF 3Unlace before unbraiding
- Untie the bow and release any tucked ribbon tails. Reverse the last crossing, feeding each end back through the braid gap it came from.
- Continue upward until the ribbon is completely free. Set it aside before taking out the braid ties or unbraiding; remove it before sleep or snag-prone activity.
One style; learning and removal can take longer.
You’re done when…
The ribbon forms loose crossings, both braids remain comfortable and the bow and reverse threading path are accessible.
