Brush dry straight or wavy hair without pulling

Divide dry straight or wavy hair, support above tangles, and brush in short passes from the ends upward without yanking.

One hand supports above a tangle while the other brushes the free ends in a short pass.

Step by step

  1. Dry hands inspect a smooth hairbrush and bring one straight or wavy section forward.
    STEP 1 OF 3

Check the brush and make a section

    • Confirm hair is dry and the brush is clean, smooth and free of broken teeth or sharp edges.
    • Bring one reachable section forward and hold it loosely near the mids.
    • Set aside any fixed mat rather than brushing into it.
  2. One hand supports above a tangle while the other brushes the free ends in a short pass.
    STEP 2 OF 3

    Brush from the ends upward

    • Hold the section above the first tangle so the pull does not transfer directly to the scalp.
    • Make one short pass through the free ends, then move slightly higher only after the ends clear.
    • If the brush catches, lift it out, use fingers to loosen the spot and restart below it.
  3. One hand guides a light full-length brush pass after the section is clear.
    STEP 3 OF 3

Finish with few passes and clean the brush

    • Once the section clears, make one light full-length pass if needed.
    • Repeat on remaining sections without brushing the same area over and over.
    • Remove shed hair from the brush and store it dry.

About 1–5 min hands-on for gently brushing ordinary dry tangles from the ends upward and clearing shed hair. Substantial detangling or a fixed mat is outside this quick brushing estimate.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. Short or already tidy hair is quick; long lengths and ordinary snags take more passes.

You’re done when…

The brush passes from root area to ends without a yank, pain or repeated catching, and the clean brush is stored dry.
