Apply a rinse-out hair mask

A rinse-out hair mask provides a conditioning treatment for the lengths during washing. Choose this when your wash-day plan calls for an ordinary mask that comes out afterward.

A woman smooths a visible layer of white hair mask through the middle and ends of one wet hair section.

Step by step

  1. A woman gently squeezes excess water from her long wet wavy hair beside an open unbranded mask jar.
    STEP 1 OF 3

    Prepare the hair as labeled

    • After shampooing, read the mask directions for starting state, placement, waiting time and conditioner order.
    • If they say wet, squeeze away only excess water. If they say damp or towel-dried, gently squeeze or blot until the hair is no longer dripping.
    • Set the open mask within reach and bring the loose lengths forward in manageable sections.

    Coat the selected lengths

    • Start with the label-directed amount and put the container down before using both hands.
    • Support one section with one hand and smooth the mask through the directed middle lengths and ends with the other.
    • Repeat until those areas have an even coating. Do not force a comb through knots.
  3. A woman in a burgundy one-piece swimsuit rinses her long hair under shower water, guiding the lengths in front of her with both hands.

    Wait as directed, then rinse

    • Use the label's waiting time; do not extend it or add heat on your own.
    • Turn under the shower or bring reachable lengths into the water. Guide water through each section, including underneath, and rinse thoroughly as labeled.
    • Use conditioner next only when the selected mask or routine directs it.

The photo shows rinsing in progress. Keep rinsing until visible cream is gone, and complete the thorough rinse specified on the label.

About 3–6 min hands-on for preparing wet lengths, sectioned mask application and thorough rinsing. Add the mask label's dwell. Shampooing, substantial detangling and drying are separate.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. Length, density and rinsing change the time; the damp-hair mode also includes towel blotting.

You’re done when…

The directed waiting time is complete and you have rinsed the mask thoroughly as labeled, with no visible cream remaining. Continue with conditioner only if your selected directions call for it.
