Apply a rinse-out hair mask

If you use a conditioning mask for rough or tangled lengths, these steps help you reach underneath each section and complete the rinse. Choose wet or damp preparation from your mask’s directions.

Step by step

    Read the complete mask directions

    • Check the amount, starting wetness, placement, waiting time and conditioner order before shampooing.
    • Use the wet-hair step or the damp-hair step below, as the mask says. Then continue with sectioning.
    • Keep the jar and lid on a stable ledge you can reach. Have clean hands and water ready for rinsing.

    If the label says wet, remove drips

    • After shampooing, keep the lengths wet. Gently squeeze away dripping water with your hands.
    • Skip the towel-blotting step below. Continue with sectioning while your hair is still wet.

    If the label says damp, blot gently

    • After shampooing, press the lengths gently inside a clean cotton T-shirt or soft towel to remove dripping water.
    • Stop once the hair is damp as the mask describes. If it is already at that state, go straight to sectioning. Do not rub.

    Bring one section within reach

    • Bring the loose lengths forward over your shoulders.
    • Use your fingers to separate sections small enough to smooth between your hands. Stop if strands catch a knot.

    Take a portion of the mask

    • Open the container and take a portion of the total amount on its label.
    • Put the container down before using both hands. Divide that total between your sections rather than taking a full dose for each.

    • Gently spread the portion over your palms and fingers.
    • Keep the container on its ledge so both hands are free for the next step.

    Smooth it through the lengths

    • Support one section with one hand. Use the other to smooth the mask from the middle lengths toward the tips.
    • Reach the hair underneath as well. Repeat on the other sections, keeping the scalp clear.
    • Stop if your fingers catch a knot. Do not pull through it or keep coating the same outer layer.

    Wait for the time on the label

    • Leave the mask on for its stated waiting time. A timer can help you keep track.
    • Do not add heat, a cap or extra waiting time. Keep any required follow-up conditioner ready.

    Guide water through every section

    • Stand under an ordinary shower and bring the lengths forward. Lift and turn each section so water reaches underneath.
    • Keep rinsing until visible cream is gone and you have completed the rinse on the label.
    • Follow any remaining conditioner instructions. Rinse product off your hands, close the container and wipe up spills before leaving.

Allow about 3–6 minutes of handling with wet preparation, or 4–7 with damp preparation. This includes setup, application, one thorough rinse and cleanup. Add the mask’s wait. Shampooing, detangling, any separate conditioner and drying take extra time.
