Apply a pre-shampoo conditioning mask
Choose this when your wash-day plan includes a conditioning mask before shampoo. Working through manageable sections helps you cover the lengths and complete the wash-out without treating the mask as a replacement for conditioner.

Step by step
STEP 1 OF 3Check the sequence and dampen
- Check that your mask allows damp hair before shampoo; read its amount, placement, waiting time and complete wash-out sequence.
- Set the mask, shampoo, any required conditioner and a timer within reach. Dampen the lengths, then gently blot away dripping water.
- Bring loose sections forward over your shoulders. Use small sections you can reach without pulling.
STEP 2 OF 3Smooth through sections and wait
- Put the label-directed amount on your hands, then set the container down before touching your hair.
- Support one section and smooth the cream through its permitted lengths and ends. Gently open the section to cover the inside; keep it off the scalp.
- Repeat across the intended area. Leave hair loose for the label’s daytime waiting time; use a cap only if directed, and add no heat.
STEP 3 OF 3Remove, shampoo and finish
- Use a comfortable shower or basin to rinse as directed, gently opening sections so water reaches underneath.
- Shampoo and rinse in the order your mask specifies. Repeat cleansing only when its directions call for it.
- Apply and rinse any required conditioner, including its separate waiting time. Do not assume the pre-shampoo mask replaces it.
- Close the containers, wash your hands and clean slippery residue from the washing area. Dry and style separately.
About 12–25 min hands-on for preparation, sectioned application, removal, shampoo, any conditioning and cleanup. Add label waits; drying and styling are separate.
You’re done when…
The mask is removed and its shampoo and conditioning sequence is complete. Notice the feel of your lengths after normal drying, without assuming a particular result.
