Hair Care Guides

Sort your hair out before the whistle.
Know the rules, then rehearse the style.

Contact sports come with rules about ties, coverings and headgear, and a style that slips mid-match is a distraction you don’t need. Ask what your sport and competition allow, then try the style in a proper practice first. Comfortable isn’t the same as protective.

What is going on

An athlete and coach review printed information beside a sports bag.

Ask what this competition actually allows

Check with your coach or an official which ties, coverings and fasteners are permitted for this event. The rules change between sports and governing bodies. If you wear headgear, it still has to fit over whatever style you choose. Settle doubts before you play.

A woman examines a claw clip away from her hair, holding its solid body.

Everyday handy isn’t the same as allowed

The claw clip that gets you through errands may be unsafe for contact or won’t sit under headgear. Go through every item in your usual setup. Keep only what’s permitted, and swap in an approved option rather than hiding a hard fastener under a covering.

What helps, day to day

A woman supports her low ponytail with her left hand while her right fingers release the opened loop of a mauve fabric scrunchie around the base.

The style keeps coming loose during practice

  • Fix it at a proper break, the way your sport’s rules allow.
  • Ask whether the tie, covering or style itself needs changing.
  • Don’t keep pulling the hairline tighter to make up for a setup that slips every time.

Your roots are pulling before you’ve even started

  • Take the style down while you’re off the field.
  • Redo the approved option with less tension and check it again with your headgear on.
  • If nothing permitted feels comfortable, ask your coach or an official what to do.

Your kit is still damp or already used

  • Keep your towels and hair things to yourself.
  • Wash kit after every session and tumble dry if the care label allows.
  • If something can’t be washed that way, ask the team what to do and find a clean alternative.

Products, by the job they do

Plan the wash for after the session

Shower soon after you finish, then wash your hair only if it needs it. Shampoo deals with your scalp, sweat and whatever held the style, not the team’s hygiene rules.

Browse cleansing products. For shampoo recommendations, share how your roots feel between washes and what you use now.

Take the style down before you detangle

Remove every fastener carefully first, then condition and detangle the way you normally would. Never force a comb through a style that’s still holding, whatever your length or treatments.

Browse rinse-out conditioners. Tell the consultation what you want from a conditioner and what you disliked about previous ones.

How to do it

A woman uses both hands to gently work shampoo at the back and sides of her scalp, with the lengths hanging loose.

1. Wash once the style is out

Take out the accessories before you wash. Wet the scalp, work the shampoo in and rinse well. Your protective gear has its own cleaning instructions, so follow those separately.

Hard clip out before play

The hard clip comes out ahead of the game. What you can wear on the field is still down to the sport’s own rules.

Used towel away from clean kit

An athlete moves a used towel into a separate transport bag, leaving the clean towel outside.

The used towel is separated from the clean things for the trip home. It is still a used towel, it just is not touching the clean ones.

Help with your hair-care routine

Bring your hair-care questions to the consultation. You can also read planning personal supplies across several matches.

  • Who tells me which hair ties and coverings are allowed?
  • Does my style work under the headgear without pulling?
  • What clean kit do I need for after the game?

Tell us the sport, its rules, your equipment, your length and what loosens or pulls in practice. That lets ordinary care and the takedown fit around the sport, while the officials and the equipment instructions have the final say.
