Lightly palm-roll a mature loc
Try light palm rolling if you want to smooth the outside of an established loc. Work on a few reachable lengths without tightening the roots; leave any frizz that does not settle with gentle handling.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 4Bring one intact loc into reach
- Wash and dry your hands. Start with lightly damp or dry locs; no styling product or tool is needed for this movement.
- Choose a front or side loc and bring its free length forward. Keep a loose curve above your hands, so its root is not pulled tight.
- Check the part you will handle. Skip it if it feels sore, looks thin or damaged, or includes an extension join.
STEP 2 OF 4Roll a short section between your palms
- Place the free length between two flat palms, well below the root. Close your hands only enough to touch the loc lightly.
- Slide one palm forward as the other slides back, so the loc turns between them. Keep the movement small; do not clamp or pull downward.
- Move on rather than repeatedly rubbing one spot. Stop immediately if the loc pulls, hurts or feels warm from friction.
STEP 3 OF 4Open your hands before moving lower
- Open your palms to release their pressure. Rest the loc in one open hand while placing the other a little farther down its length.
- Bring your palms together lightly and repeat the same small rolling movement on that next section. Work toward the tip only while the root stays relaxed.
- Make one light pass along the reachable length. Do not keep rubbing a bump or frizzy area to force it smooth.
STEP 4 OF 4Release the loc and leave it loose
- Open both hands and let the loc hang. Its root should remain relaxed and comfortable; stop if handling has made it feel tight.
- Repeat on another reachable, intact loc only if wanted. It is fine to leave some frizz.
- Let any damp locs finish drying loose before tying or covering them. Palm rolling does not replace drying.
About 1–3 active minutes for a few reachable locs, including hand preparation. Washing and drying are separate.
You’re done when…
You have released the loc without pulling or tightening its root. Stop there, even if some frizz remains. Leave any damp lengths loose to finish drying.
