Fill and label a hair-product travel bottle

Carry a smaller amount of your usual shampoo or conditioner in a compatible refillable bottle. Keep the product name and directions with it, and check the closure before packing.

Step by step

  1. An adult checks an empty clean travel bottle and its cap on a dry counter.
    STEP 1 OF 5

    Prepare the empty bottle

    • Check that both the hair product and the refillable bottle allow this use. If you cannot confirm compatibility, keep the original package or choose a factory travel size.
    • Wash and dry your hands. Start with a bottle and cap cleaned according to their instructions and fully dry. Set the cap inside-up on a clean surface without touching the inside.
  2. An adult pours shampoo from its original container into an upright travel bottle while steadying it with the other hand.
    STEP 2 OF 5

    Fill with one product

    • Stand the open travel bottle on the counter and steady it with one hand. Slowly pour or pump shampoo or conditioner into it with the other.
    • Keep the two openings apart. Stop at the bottle’s fill limit, leaving the space its instructions require. Set the original bottle down and close it.
  3. One hand steadies a filled travel bottle while the other turns its white screw cap closed.
    STEP 3 OF 5

    Close the travel bottle

    • Wipe product off the outside of the neck with a clean cloth, keeping the inside untouched.
    • Fit the cap squarely and close it using the bottle’s instructions. Check that any flip lid is shut too.
  4. A closed travel bottle is held cap-down over a sink with its cap and neck visible for a leak check.
    STEP 4 OF 5

Check the closed bottle for leaks

    • Hold the closed bottle over the sink. Follow its leak-check instructions; for an ordinary screw-cap bottle, gently tilt it cap-down and look for product around the seal.
    • If it leaks, set it upright and check the closure. Replace a damaged or leaking container. Dry the outside before adding the label.

Before refilling next time, use up or dispose of leftovers, then empty, clean and dry the bottle. Do not top up old product with fresh product.

  5. An adult writes a product label beside a closed travel bottle before packing.
    STEP 5 OF 5

Label it and keep the directions

    • Write the exact product name and the fill date on a label, then attach it to the bottle. Check an existing label matches the new contents.
    • Keep a photo or copy of the original directions, warnings and any expiry or opening-date information. Make these available with your travel kit.
    • Pack the closed, labelled bottle in a separate bag to contain any spill.

About 3–8 minutes to fill, close, check and label one bottle, excluding its earlier cleaning and drying.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. A narrow opening or awkward cap can take longer.

You’re done when…

The compatible product is in a closed, identified bottle, its original instructions are saved, and a check over the sink shows no leak.
