Apply styling powder with your hands
Try styling powder when dry hair needs more grip to hold a lifted or separated shape. This method is for powders that you rub through your hands before applying.
Step by step
STEP 1 OF 5Tip a little into your palm
- Start with dry hair and clean, dry hands. Check that the powder allows this hand method and read its starting amount and placement directions.
- Open the container. Hold one palm below face level and gently tip in the label’s small starting amount.
- Set the container down. Use that hand to close it before rubbing your hands together.
STEP 2 OF 5Rub it through your hands
- Gently rub your palms and fingertips together to spread the powder. Keep your hands below your face; do not clap them or blow away excess.
- Some powders become hard to see as you rub. Follow the product directions and check the feel on your hands before deciding you need more.
STEP 3 OF 5Work through one reachable area
- Choose an area you want to shape. Spread your fingers through the hair where the powder directions allow it; for root-to-tip use, start near the roots and guide toward the ends.
- Use your other hand to separate or steady the hair as needed. Work gently, without scrubbing the scalp, and check that area before moving to another.
STEP 4 OF 5Lift or direct a few pieces
- Use your fingertips to lift a small group for height or guide it in the direction you want. Release it before shaping the next group.
- If you want to keep curls or coils together, guide the group rather than pulling apart its strands.
STEP 5 OF 5Let go and check the finish
- Lower your hands and check the shape in a fixed mirror, if you use one. The hair should sit where you want it without visible loose powder.
- Stop once it has enough grip. If one area needs more, use what remains on your hands there first; do not keep adding to hair that feels coated.
- Wash your hands and wipe any spill with the cloth, following the product’s cleanup directions. Use its removal instructions when you wash your hair.
About 3–8 minutes to check directions, dispense and spread powder, work through selected areas, shape and clean up. Washing and drying beforehand, or washing it out later, are extra.
You’re done when…
The hair holds the shape you want after you let go, without loose powder or heavy patches. Stop if it feels more coated than you want.
