Apply leave-in conditioner

A leave-in conditioner can add slip and softness to damp lengths after washing. Choose this when your label calls for a product that stays in the hair.

Step by step

  1. A woman brings her long damp coily hair forward and divides the lengths with both hands.

    Prepare damp, reachable lengths

    • Finish rinsing any wash-day products that are meant to come out.
    • Gently blot or squeeze away dripping water until your hair matches the label's damp starting state.
    • Bring the lengths forward and divide them loosely so both sides are within reach.

    Apply the directed amount

    • Start with the amount on the label; add more only as its directions allow.
    • For a cream or lotion, spread it over your palms. For a spray, mist the selected hair areas as labeled.
    • Begin on the middle lengths and ends, keeping the scalp and roots clear.

    Distribute lightly and leave in

    • Support one section with one hand and smooth with the other from the middle toward the tips.
    • Repeat on the remaining sections, stopping when the selected lengths have a light, even coating.
    • Do not rinse. Continue with the next styling step in your plan.

About 1–3 min hands-on for blotting drips, dividing lengths and distributing the leave-in. Washing, substantial detangling and subsequent styling or drying are separate.
