Apply heat protectant evenly

Before a blow-dry, working through small sections helps you keep track of where your heat protectant has gone. This guide covers a pump spray on damp hair.

Step by step

  1. A woman separates her own damp hair into loose sections with the spray bottle set on a dresser.

    Prepare damp hair and sections

    • Read the label for amount, distance, placement and dryer use; have a wide-tooth comb ready if comb-through is directed. Start with damp, detangled hair.
    • Bring your lengths forward. Separate reachable sections with your fingers; clip other hair loosely aside if useful.

    Cover one section at a time

    • Hold one section with one hand. Use the other to spray the hair at the distance and amount on the label.
    • Cover the areas you will dry, including the hair near the roots when directed. Aim away from your face and scalp.
    • Put the bottle down to turn or divide the section. Work around both sides and the back, reaching the inner layers.

    Roots means the hair nearest the scalp. It does not mean spraying the skin. The photo shows the lengths; repeat over every label-directed area.

    Distribute and finish the preparation

    • Set the spray down. If directed, gently comb each section to spread it; start at the ends and stop at any snag.
    • Check that you have worked through each section. Release the clips, close the bottle and wash and dry your hands.
    • Leave the product in. Follow its drying instructions before beginning your blow-dry; do not add extra spray just to make hair feel coated.

About 2–5 min hands-on for sectioning, spray coverage, label-permitted distribution and cleanup. Start with damp, detangled hair. Add any label wait; blow-drying is a separate active step.

Practical editorial estimate, not measured. Covering inner layers takes longer than a surface mist; very long or dense hair can take longer.

You’re done when…

Every section you plan to dry has received the label-directed application. There are no forgotten inner layers; the spray is put away and your hands are dry. You cannot verify heat protection by feel.
