Apply a pre-wash oil treatment

Apply a pre-wash oil to dry lengths without soaking the hair or coating the scalp. Work one section at a time, then shampoo it out, using the amount and any wait in your oil’s directions.

Step by step

    Read the pre-wash directions

    • Check that the oil allows use on dry lengths before shampooing. Find its amount, any waiting time and the washing instructions before opening the bottle.
    • Place the oil and shampoo within reach on a dry counter. Start with loose, dry hair; gently separate any sections you can handle without pulling.

    Check your own bottle for the amount, waiting time and any treatment-aftercare restrictions.

    Dispense into one palm

    • Hold the bottle close above one clean, dry palm and dispense slowly. Use the label’s amount and wipe up any drips straight away.
    • Close the bottle and put it down before using both hands. If you divide the amount between sections, keep track of the total.

    Spread over your palms

    • Lightly rub your palms together to spread the oil into a thin film. Keep your hands in front of you, away from your face and clothing.

    Smooth through one section

    • Bring one loose section forward. Support it with one hand and slide the other lightly from the middle of the lengths toward the ends, keeping away from the scalp.
    • Work around the section so oil reaches both sides, then move to the next section. Use only the total amount directed; the hair does not need to drip with oil.

    Do not pull your hands through a tight knot. Stop that pass and gently free the snag before continuing; oil is not a reason to force tangles apart.

    Wait only if instructed

    • Let the lengths rest loosely without pulling or twisting them. If the label gives a waiting time for pre-wash use, set a timer for that time.
    • If no wait is given, move on to washing. Do not add heat or an overnight wait. Wash oil from your hands and wipe any slippery drips before moving to the wash area.

    Wet the hair for shampoo

    • Set the water comfortably warm in your shower or basin. Wet your scalp and lengths, holding a sprayer in one hand and opening sections with the other if needed.
    • Move sections aside so water reaches underneath, including the crown and nape. Keep the lengths loose rather than piling them on your head.

    Follow the oil’s removal instructions. If they call for a different washing sequence, use those instructions rather than this one.

    Shampoo gently

    • Put the sprayer down, if using one. Apply shampoo as directed, then use your finger pads to massage the scalp gently at the sides, crown and nape.
    • Follow the oil’s directions for cleaning the treated lengths. Keep them hanging loosely; do not scrub them together or use your nails.

    Use the shampoo amount and any waiting time on its label. More foam is not proof that the oil is washing out better.

    Rinse underneath the hair

    • Direct clean water over your scalp and down the lengths. If using a sprayer, hold it in one hand and open thick sections with the other.
    • Keep rinsing until visible suds are gone, checking the crown and nape. Repeat shampooing only when the product’s directions call for it.

    Continue with your usual conditioner and its rinse, then dry your hair gently. Keep the bottles closed and clear slippery residue from the wash area.

About 8–15 minutes hands-on for application, one shampoo wash, rinsing and cleanup. Add any label waiting time or required repeat wash. Your following conditioner, its rinse and drying take additional time.

The directed shampoo wash is complete, visible suds are rinsed away and the wash area is free of slippery spills. Judge whether the optional oil helped after your usual conditioner and drying, not while the hair is still coated with oil.
